My dad, who loved opera and passed that on to me, thought that this was the only "christmas carrol" worth listening to. He preferred a tenor singing and would listen a version by Franco Corelli. It seems that opera afficianados gravitate toward this most aria-like of the christmas songs in spite of the more mainstream cultural associations of some of the others. (But, to invoke dad's spirit, please no diva sopranos. It violates the music and the spirit of the season!)
